What a roleplay actually is
In a roleplay the creator talks to you as though you are in the room, playing a small part for the length of the video. You are at a clinic, or a salon, or a quiet shop late in the evening, and someone is taking their time with you. There is no plot to follow and nothing to work out. The story exists to give the attention somewhere to sit.
You do not have to act along, and there is nothing to say back. The pauses are there so it feels like a conversation rather than a recording.
The settings you will meet most
A few settings come up again and again because they work. A check-up, where someone examines you slowly and explains what they are doing. A salon or barber, full of brushes, scissors and running water. A friend helping you study or letting you stay the night. A shopkeeper or healer in a fantasy setting, which vtuber creators lean into more than most, since the character is already drawn.
Each brings its own sounds with it: a clinic has paper and instruments, a salon has spray bottles and combs. If you know which sounds you like, you can pick a setting rather than a creator.
Why it works when it works
Most roleplays are a version of the same thing: someone competent is paying close attention to you, is in no hurry, and wants nothing from you. That is not a common experience, and it turns out to be very relaxing to hear even when you know it is a recording.
This is also why a roleplay can fall flat for reasons that have nothing to do with the sound quality. If the character is rushed, or too loud, or talks over you, the feeling goes. Pace matters more than acting.
If it feels awkward at first
Being addressed directly is strange for the first minute or two, and plenty of people bounce off roleplay before that passes. Try one where the setting is ordinary, like a haircut, before anything more elaborate. Shorter videos are also easier to start on than a fifty-minute story.
